"You're my husband, George. I don't think of you as a man." "Thank you, Gracie." "I mean, as a man who does anything." "Thank you again, Gracie." ...) and Fred Allen asking the Allen's Alley gang about cold cures.

Eventually I graduated to LPs, cassette tapes and CDs of complete radio shows, with an emphasis on Sherlock Holmes and The Shadow. Now you can hear tons of material from places like Archive.org. For me, the ideal place to listen to old radio shows is a train, when your impulse is to keep looking out the window.

Jim Jordan, by the way, voiced the albatross Orville in "The Rescuers". Somehow I conflated it with the magnetic space coup in Dick Tracy and kept expecting the strip to show a version with those cages at each end. It should be remembered that Willy Ley was prominently featured with Wernher Von Braun in the Disneyland "Man In Space" episodes. He was already well known, but that shot of national exposure likely led to the model line.DBensonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01144515471557731622noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25473451.post-47135514837022052752024-01-16T15:38:31.185-05:002024-01-16T15:38:31.185-05:00Do these ever bring back memories! Along with Bonestell's paintings in a second-hand copy of The Exploration of Mars Polgreen's pictures were burnt into my brain as the way real spaceships should look. Never got one of the Orbital Rocket kits--a friend had one--but I built the Space Taxi with its cages on either end to prevent stuff floating off into space. Usually an adult male, he peddles stuff from a tray or a suitcase on legs. In the world of panel cartoons he's frequently selling little windup men who are scurrying around on the sidewalk.

Addams's waif -- and many others -- descend from Hans Christian Anderson's tearjerker The Little Match Girl. The story has the title orphan lighting her last matches to keep from freezing, dreaming of happiness until angels take her to heaven. There have been multiple cartoons and film riffs, some closing with a poor child's dreams coming true ("The Shanty Where Santy Claus Lives" and "Somewhere in Dreamland") while others keep Anderson's ending (Disney produced a solemn Russia-set version, meant for "Fantasia 2000"). The Little Match Girl was well known enough to be a recognizable reference, like the three bears or Red Riding Hood.

Addams cheekily makes the pathos absurd with the girl not even having matches to sell. The Mickey Mouse featurette "Prince and the Pauper" later offered a sillier take: Threadbare Goofy peddles snow cones in the depth of winter and wonders why they aren't selling. Eventually Addams had a match girl cursing a little Japanese girl, who undercut her with cheap imported lighters.DBensonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01144515471557731622noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25473451.post-44145472067927063432023-12-19T16:19:49.720-05:002023-12-19T16:19:49.720-05:00Mike, thank you for all the work cultivating these...Mike, thank you for all the work cultivating these!
