Morning Funnies Cereal

Ralston Purina and King Features put together this SUNDAY FUNNIES cereal a while back. I was told that this was a promo package, but I saw a price sticker on it and vaguely remember this cereal being on the shelves. Or maybe I'm just being wishful.

Here's the back. Lotsa reading here!

And the back opens out, gatefold style, for even more funnies! Seems like a great idea. I have no idea what the cereal looked like or what it tasted like or if it was in the shape of little Beetle Baileys or what.

To the right: a small promo statue of THE LOCKHORNS.

My thanks to Bunny Hoest, who let us in her studio with the digital camera!

  1. And that is what I call cretive marketing. Its genius turning cereal box to a comic book. Its like buying 2 in one cereal and comic book for the price of one. Genius!

  2. I loved this cereal. It was in production for about a year or so. It consisted of little smiley faces and marshmallows. (Basically colored sugar). Still I collect all 6 boxes.

  3. I never even knew for sure if these cereal boxes actually made it to the shelves! Good to hear that they did and sorry to see that it was all a quick flash in the pan.

  4. I too remember this cereal from the late 80's or early 90's when I lived in Florida. Like Yalanda said, it was multi colored smiley faces with marshmallows.

I also remember this cereal, although I had never eaten it. I remember the commercial featuring a lot of the comic strip characters telling how it was a great cereal, etc. etc., with Hagar the Horrible talking in a "Norvejin" accent.

  6. I remember this cereal well. I bought it at the 99 cent store where I'm sure was it's final resting place.
Being an artist, it was fun to have the comics (not exactly the hot ones of the day however) but the cereal--oh MAN! Something akin to hopped up Fruit Loops or Trix. Upon opening the box you could smell this cereal from 9 ft away. It was so pungent that I went back and bought many more boxes and had a party wrapped around it. Thanks for having a photo of it, I'd long ago gave up ever expecting anyone to remember this cereal or even seeing it again.

  8. What's surprising to me is how fondly this cereal is remembered, despite its described pungent Trix-on-crack kinda smell.

It's 2010 as I type -- 4 years after I shot these photos of the Morning Funnies cereal and this entry is still getting traffic.

    Cereal people? You paying attention?

  9. We hope they're paying attention Mike!

By the way, here's the ad that promoted this on TV...

I remember eating this stuff myself and bothering to read some comics that were not in my local paper (like Marvin and Luann).

I was just thinking of this cereal again after someone mentioned Funky Winkerbean showed up in the ad I linked to above (if only as a quick walk-on type thing among a crowd of other comic strip greats).
