NCS Division Awards - Call for Entries

The National Cartoonists Society invites cartoonists -- members and non members -- to submit their published work for award consideration.

The big news is the addition of a new award category, specifically honoring graphic novels.

All of the rules are below, as are links to the 2 forms needed for each entry. I'm the Awards Coordinator this year and I'm glad to answer any questions or concerns.

Here's the press release:

It's time to prepare your entry for the National Cartoonists Society Division Awards.

Below, you will see the list of the juries which will judge the categories, the jury chair and the address to which you will send your entry.

Please remember only recent work can be considered. This means work published between the dates of December 1, 2008 and December 31, 2009. Please submit published tear sheets when possible and document when and where the work was published. Members of the National Cartoonists Society and nonmembers may submit.

Each entry must be accompanied by a completed ENTRY FORM and
a BIO SHEET.

The winners will be announced at the 64th Annual Reuben Awards Dinner on May 29, 2010.

  1. Does "web publishing" count? What about
    "self-published" greeting cards?

  2. Thanks for your questions, Mark.

Web publishing and self-published greeting cards are not NCS award categories.

Do you know of any? Re: previous question.

    Thanks,

  4. Hi Sheila,

There are a good number of awards for Web cartoonists out there. All I suggest is Googling "webcomics awards." Hope this helps.

  6. Just curious, but didn't the North Central Chapter just judge the comic strip category in 2007?

  7. Is it international or just for the US?

  8. What if works were published without compensation?

  9. Hey Mark T - Sorry to say, I don't have that information in front of me.

Pingolito - International entries are welcome.

Kim - The awards recognize published cartoon work. Unless I misunderstood your question, compensation is a separate contractual matter between you and the client.

  10. Thanks, Mike. What I was getting at was are works that were published but not paid for eligible? i.e. do they have to be "professional" or merely "published"?

  11. P.S., the links to the 2 forms don't seem to work

  12. Hi Kim,

I tried those links and they work OK for me. Please try again if you don't mind.

I'm sorry for the confusion. The awards honor published work. The amount of money you may or may not have been paid is not part of the criteria.

If you have any other concerns, you're welcome to email me.

  13. You don't have that information in front of you? Is it behind you?

Also, another question fer ya...is the NCS doing a mailing this year with all of this information to NCS members, or should we download the entry forms?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Current NCS members will receive a mailing. It was sent out on Monday, January 11.

  15. Gotcha. Didn't know if they were saving on shipping costs this year which, in a digital age, makes sense.

    Thanks, Mike!

  16. Hello again, just to make it clear... International entries are allowed... But what i meant and still have doubt is if its only for US citizens, cuz i know someone who might apply but its not from the US

    ReplyDelete
  17. Hi Pingolito. Anyone may enter. They do not have to be a US citizen.

  18. Ah! that's good news! :D Thank you Mike!
