Bill Maher: Grow up -- Comic Books Are for Kids

Now trending: Peter David's response to Bill Maher's condemnation of comic books as kid stuff.

Bill Maher has twice made fun of comic books, and in particular Stan Lee, on his HBO show Real Time with Bill Maher. Comic books are for people who are "stuck in an everlasting childhood." The nerd internet blew up. And the nerd internet is definitely the majority of the internet.

People were enraged, tweeting, Facebooking, etc. about "how dare Maher insult comic books and Stan Lee!"

I didn't pay it much mind, not last week and not a few months ago. Who cares what he thinks. Look just because an HBO comedian thinks that comic books are dumb, doesn't mean that you can't go out there and consume your comic books and comic book movies and so on. Go ahead. No one is stopping you from the nerd life.

My take: Maher is blaming a delivery system. I mean, Bill Maher is on TV and most of TV is pretty awful. You know the quote:

"Television is called a medium because nothing on it is well done." -- Fred Allen

Most of TV is junk. Junk sells. Ditto movies and books. But it's just a conduit for telling stories. Most comic books are dopey and not for me. But some are terrific. It's content not form, Bill.

Now, please excuse me. "Ant Man and the Wasp" just dropped on Netflix.
