Happy Birthday, Don Orehek!

A very Happy Birthday the talented cartoonist, and my friend, Don Orehek! Many happy returns, Don!

To celebrate, let's take a look at YANKEE DOODLE DANDIES: A STAR SPANGLED SATIRE by Bart Andrews and Mary McCartney, with illustrations by Don Orehek. It's copyright 1975 the respective creators and was published by Signet in June 1975.

Big hat tip to Tom Mason for mailing me a copy of YANKEE DOODLE DANDIES! Thanks, Tom!

Wonderful illustrations. As a sixth grade teacher, I feel that comic books are a great way to teach history. My wife, a homeschooler with our 14 year old twins, came across an observation that, as an adult, if you want to gain a basic, broad knowledge of a subject (say a particular period of history), a great way is to check out a children's book on the subject. I like that idea, and add to it that a comic about the subject is also a pleasurable (and memorable) way to become familiar with the main ideas. I believe that the combination of words and images, along with humor, will lead to longer retention of facts. The "Horrible Histories" series of books is a good example of this. Now I'll be looking for a copy of Don Orehek's book (I've already learned something new just from reading these pages of his).
