From the Dick Buchanan Files: Virgil Parch Part Two; VIP in the 1950s

Here's the second part of an historical overview of Virgil "VIP" Partch's gag cartoon output, courtesy of Dick Buchanan. The first part is here.

Take it away, Dick:

---

Virgil Parch Part Two; VIP in the 1950’s

1951 – 1959

Virgil Partch entered the 1950’s with the same zany spirit he deployed so skillfully in the forties.
His cartoons appeared in virtually every issue of Collier’s.  They often published two in each issue, sometimes three. He fulfilled the same roll with True Magazine, usually with two cartoons in each issue. He also illustrated the letters column and, for a short time, he was True cartoon editor.

Here, in chronological order, is Virgil Partch in the 1950’s -- a couple VIP classics as well as a few forgotten cartoons from 1950 to 1959.

1. 1950. Partch begins 1950 with the same verve that made him famous. True Magazine  April, 1950

2. True Magazine.  September, 1951

3. The Korean conflict enabled Partch to return to his roots—the service men that boosted his rise to fame in WWII. American Legion Magazine October, 1952

4. American Legion Magazine July, 1953

5. True Magazine February, 1953

6. Partch did appear everywhere. Editor Bill Yates snagged this one for Dell. 1000 Jokes Magazine November-January, 1954

 7.  Collier’s January 21, 1955

8.  Partch’s desert rats were a favorite with readers. Appearing as early as 1944, he created seemingly endless new gags with this pair. Collier’s June 22, 1956

9.  Collier’s December 7, 1956

10. In 1957, when Collier’s cartoon editor Gurney Williams moved to Look Magazine Partch followed. He continued to create classic cartoons like this one. Look Magazine April 16, 1957

11.  For Laughing Out Loud July-September, 1957

12.  Look Magazine March 19, 1957

13.  Look Magazine July 22, 1958

14.  Look Magazine December 8, 1959

15.  1959. At the end of the decade Partch has perfected a style that is sharp and simple. No surprise--his gags continued to be the very best, as demonstrated by this classic.  Look Magazine March 17, 1959

From the Dick Buchanan Files: Virgil Parch Part One; VIP in the 1940s

Here's the beginning of a series from my friend Dick Buchanan about Virgil VIP Partch. I am really enjoying the looksee at the development of one of the most popular gag cartoonists ever.

Thanks, Dick, and take it away:

---

Virgil Parch Part One; VIP in the 1940’s

1943 – 1949

It would come as no surprise that the largest folder in the Cartoon Clip File is labeled VIP,
Virgil Partch was a huge sensation when he began appearing in the pages of Collier’s in 1942. Over the ensuing years his cartoons appeared in every major magazine. His cartoons adorned many ads newspapers and magazines. He was written up n Newsweek and Time as the phenomenon he certainly was. Although he contributed only a few cartoons to The New Yorker, he did sell them gags for Peter Arno, Charles Addams and others.

Over the ensuing years Partch became one of the most prolific and influential cartoonists of his time.

Here is small sample of some this prolific cartoonists during the first decade of his incredible career.

Rather than present the in the Clip File’s usual haphazard manner, these have been painstakingly arranged chronologically, offer a glimpse of Partch’s development over the years.

1. One of his best, from Collier’s January 30, 1943.

2. Collier’s December 4, 1943.

3. Collier’s May 27, 1944

4. Collier’s, June 41944

7. Collier’s October 11, 1947

8. Collier's  September 6, 1947

9. Collier’s November 29, 1947

10. Partch liked to sign what he felt were his best gags as VIPPER. Can’t disagree on this one.  Collier’s August 28, 1948

12. True Magazine March 1948

From the Dick Buchanan Files: Even More Color Cartoons 1940 - 1956

Some more rare old gag cartoon from the files of Dick Buchanan. These are pretty rare since they were published in color back in the day when color was pretty expensive.

Thanks once more to my friend Dick. Here he is with:

EVEN MORE COLOR CARTOONS – 1940 – 1956

Your friendly Greenwich Village crackpot cartoon archivist is back once more with
Color Cartoons.

Due to the miracle of fiction, I managed clip most of these cartoons from the pages of Collier’s. For a time in the 1940’s Collier’s was America’s best selling weekly magazine and its Cartoon Editor Gurney Williams was a celebrated figure in the cartoon world during that period. Collier’s stable of cartoonists in the 1940’s was second only to The New Yorker, with Virgil Partch and Hank Ketcham as the mainstays, complimented by many of the New Yorker regulars. When Colllier’s folded in 1956, William Steig, Syd Hoff, Ned Hilton and Eldon Dedini were among several New Yorker cartoonists who followed Williams to Look Magazine.

Here is another selection of vintage color cartoons from another century by some of the more popular cartoonists of their day.

1. AL ROSS. Typical ‘40’s humor by the young Al Ross at his best. A full-page cartoon from 1940. Click January 1940

"No, no, you're not in the way at all, Miss Daly! Just stay right where you are!"

2. SYD HOFF. One of several fine New Yorker cartoonists now fondly remembered for his equally fine children’s books. In Hoff’s case, Danny and the Dinosaur. Collier’s November 12, 1949

3. MARTHA BLANCHARD. Collier’s September 4, 1948

4. NED HILTON. Collier’s July 2, 1949

5. HARRY LYONS. Lyons was a top gag cartoonist in the 1950’s and ‘60’s before becoming a political cartoonist for the Honolulu Advertiser. Collier’s March 30, 1956

6. IRWIN CAPLAN. Collier’s August 7, 1948

7. STANLEY BERENSTAIN. Stan did this one himself, as Jan was visiting her mother. Collier’s September 18, 1948

8. GREGORY d’ALLSSIO. Cartoonist’s love to lampoon modern art. Art Students League instructor d’Allessio shows us his Picasso. Collier’s July 2, 1949

9. MISCHA RICHTER. Let’s face it, many animals are funnier than most people we know. Collier’s September 10, 1949

10. DICK HESSER. Collier’s January 7, 1955

11. DON TOBIN. Another of the Disney gang turned gag cartoonist, Tobin later created the gag panel The Little Woman (1953 -1982) Collier’s July 9, 1949

12. HARRY MACE. Collier’s August 20, 1954

13. ERNEST MARQUEZ. Collier’s November 12, 1949

14. NED HILTON. Collier’s July 9, 1949

15. JOHN RUGE. Collier’s May 3, 1953
