From the Dick Buchanan Files: Even More Color Cartoons 1940 - 1956

Some more rare old gag cartoon from the files of Dick Buchanan. These are pretty rare since they were published in color back in the day when color was pretty expensive.

Thanks once more to my friend Dick. Here he is with:

EVEN MORE COLOR CARTOONS – 1940 – 1956

Your friendly Greenwich Village crackpot cartoon archivist is back once more with
Color Cartoons.

Due to the miracle of fiction, I managed clip most of these cartoons from the pages of Collier’s. For a time in the 1940’s Collier’s was America’s best selling weekly magazine and its Cartoon Editor Gurney Williams was a celebrated figure in the cartoon world during that period. Collier’s stable of cartoonists in the 1940’s was second only to The New Yorker, with Virgil Partch and Hank Ketcham as the mainstays, complimented by many of the New Yorker regulars. When Colllier’s folded in 1956, William Steig, Syd Hoff, Ned Hilton and Eldon Dedini were among several New Yorker cartoonists who followed Williams to Look Magazine.

Here is another selection of vintage color cartoons from another century by some of the more popular cartoonists of their day.

1. AL ROSS. Typical ‘40’s humor by the young Al Ross at his best. A full-page cartoon from 1940. Click January 1940

"No, no, you're not in the way at all, Miss Daly! Just stay right where you are!"

2. SYD HOFF. One of several fine New Yorker cartoonists now fondly remembered for his equally fine children’s books. In Hoff’s case, Danny and the Dinosaur. Collier’s November 12, 1949

3. MARTHA BLANCHARD. Collier’s September 4, 1948

4. NED HILTON. Collier’s July 2, 1949

7. STANLEY BERENSTAIN. Stan did this one himself, as Jan was visiting her mother. Collier’s September 18, 1948
