Typical New Hampshire Cartooning Scene

I'm drawing up a "typical New Hampshire cartoonist" scene. Whatever that is!

I agreed, in a phone conversation with an editor, to come up with 3 rough sketches of a typical NH cartoonist. When I got off the phone, I realized I didn't know what one visual of that idea would be, much less the three I promised

Hmm. New Hampshire. What says "New Hampshire?" I came up with a handful of ideas:
  • Old Man of the Mountain monument

  • Moose

  • Maple syrup

  • Foliage

So, I drew up the Old Man of the Mountain, falling on a cartoonist. As you can see, the cartoonist is holding up one of those dinky Wile E. Coyote umbrellas for protection.

And then I drew a moose-as-cartoonist, drawing with maple syrup.

And, finally, more of a gag cartoon: a cartoonist and his wife and the foliage.

Which one would you choose? I'll let you know which one the editor picked later.

My thanks to Chris Lupetti who suggested I show these.

#3 is the winner conceptually - it would be a great color gag! - though the dinky umbrella in #1 is great. Hmmm ...

Yep, #3, is a great idea. the others leave me a little flat.

I hate to jump on any bandwagon, but count me in for #3. It seems to capture what you're after.

Hi Mike - I have to go with #2. The moose at the drawing table, inking with maple syrup, captures the "typical New Hampshire cartoonist" in a completely fun way.

Thanks, Guys. I'll post the one the editor chose in a while. My only hint was that she didn't choose the one I thought she was going to.

I'm guessing number 3.

Gotta be the moose!

I am going for the moose as well, as the most readable of the three. Add some foliage if you will.

Mike --

I daresay you left out a couple of key archetypes to differentiate NH from its Northern New England neighbors; specifically:

-- Cheap Bastard
-- Rusty truck
-- Woodpile

Mike, I love all of them! The #3 is great for any state. But, I especially love that the moose is left handed and has to curl his hoof around! Great drawings. You are so good .

I lived in NH for 40 years and I'd have a hard time imagining a NH cartoonist. A great resource would be Mike Marland's RFD strip, filled with trucks and tourists, black flies and mud season.

I don't think of the moose as being especially NH -- that's more of a Maine thing -- and the fallen face of the Old Men is, I bet, something few like to think about. So I'll predict that the editor went with the leaf cartoon.

I am voting for #3! I think it's very funny and is sharp. Great jobs on all your cartoons.
