Video: Canadian Cartoonist Yardley Jones

I like how cartoonist (and painter) Yardley Jones decided to move to the small town of Sarepta, Alberta and cartoon about it. With cartoons in the local paper, the school, signs, all over Sarepta -- the whole town celebrates Mr. Jones and his work. The 3 1/2 minute video is produced by Travel Alberta Live.

Related: the STAR TREK town of the Canadian prairies: Vulcan, Alberta.

Thats great, Mike. Yardley is responsible for pretty much every ink slinger in the province of Alberta. He had a TV show, "Cartooning with Yardley Jones" in the late 80's but before that, was an editorial cartoonist for major dailies in Toronto, Montreal and of course Edmonton. He won The National Newspaper Award(Canada's Pulitzer) in 1971. He's still going strong and has a series of best selling books out there.

As well as being a huge influence on countless cartoonists up here he also helps many charities, runs marathons, and is an award winning water colour artist. I don't think he ever lived in New Sarepta as far as I know. A fine place to spend an afternoon though.

It was a good post, though.

I remember Yardley's black cat signature creature.

A lot of people laughed at Vulcan, AB, when it did the Star Trek thing in the 80s, but I think a helping of tourism can help these little towns, and they are fun places to prowl around during an afternoon drive.

Thinking also of the "Hellhound Trail" in Lousiana/Mississippi in the states, which tells the stories of local blues legends.

My family comes from Hardisty, Alberta. There's oil, and ranching, and some painters who fell in love with the area. It's great to be able to take off to one of these areas (I used to, with my Grandma in her massive 1968 Buick) and see a cool museum, like the one about Frank Frazetta or Norman Rockwell somewhere in New England.
