I've never run into Toles but when he left Buffalo, the woman who ran their educational programs was very sad because he had always been willing to take extra time with the kids who toured the paper and was quite a highlight for them. He also did a cartoon Christmas card for her program each year. I think the idea that you can make penetrating commentary and still be a nice guy is pretty well demonstrated in this interview as well.
