The garden of August 2012 looks more like the garden of September. It looks a little older than it really is. Since spring came roaring in, early and warm this year, some of the trees are already starting to turn yellow. Today was hazy and misty, and you can see that in the diffuse light in the photos.
Here's the view of all of the raised beds:
The winter squash is running all over the place. Ditto the sweet potato vines.
The squash vine borer bug got into the squash, so a lot of the squash plants died. Very sudden and very sad. It can happen overnight. A little orange fly lays some eggs and white worms emerge soon after that bore into the base of the plants. So, below is a box of dirt, with some of the winter squash plants from the box next to it (see above) wandering over into it:
At the far end of the box are four green pepper plants that are doing amazingly well. These looked like 4 sick sticks in early July. They bounced back!
Here are the tomatoes, with all of the bottom, brown leaves pulled off. We have killed a half dozen tomato hornworms so far.
They are coming along and we will soon have a large harvest!
Roma tomatoes (you can see a spot of wear on one of the green tomatoes where it rubbed up against the tomato cage):
Heritage tomatoes (I tried to reorient these photos of the tomatoes 90 degrees, but the blogger uploader is for some reason not responding to my demands this morning):
The cucmbers are happy, but are more interested in growing horizontally than vertically.
A couple of snaps from the flower garden and we're done:
Thanks for looking at these. When I first started posting these garden updates, I really was only doing it for family. But these posts, as completely non-cartoon-related as they are, are always popular!
