1950s-60s TV Comic Book Covers
The Saved From the Paper Drive blog showcases a mountain of TV-related comic book covers from the 1950s and 60s. Most are Dell and Gold Key. The interesting thing about the collection is that there were comic books for such short lived, not-so-well-remembered series as HE'S DICKENS, I'M FENSTER, IT'S ABOUT TIME and THE NEW PEOPLE.
Begin with Part One here.
This got me thinking about today's television. What if there were Dell and Gold Key Comics around today? What would their TV show tie-in covers look like?
I think they would go a little like this ...
Above: A BURN NOTICE Dell comic book cover I made up. I would buy it -- especially if it had some Dan Spiegle art in it!
Above: the Gold Key PROJECT RUNWAY comic book cover mock up!
Above: THE MILLIONAIRE MATCHMAKER comic that I Photoshopped. OK, I don't think I'd buy this one.
OK, a 30 ROCK TV comic book with Kenneth the Page on the cover? I would totally read this one.
A mock up cover for Dell Comics' THE REAL HOUSEWIVES OF BEVERLY HILLS. Drama, drama, drama! And plastic surgery! This would be a big seller!
Note how the line-up for Rachel Maddow's comic book are from THE RACHEL MADDOW SHOW and the other half are from THE LAND OF THE GIANTS! Hoo ha! Mash up, mash up!
Lots of fun to mash up these covers, I tell ya!

20 Foot Santa Claus Conviction Wins $1000 Reward
FYI: The 20 foot tall Santa Claus is still missing.
A home made sign from a town north of me in NH: The 20 foot tall Santa has was stolen many months ago. $1000 reward for the arrest and conviction and return of giant Santa! I still wonder what exactly this 20 foot Santa was and who created it and, moreover, who would spend the time and energy to steal such a thing.
The subject verb agreement is scary. The money will be awarded only if
Hmm. Maybe he's hanging out with Paul Bunyan and the Jolly Green Giant ....

JACK BENNY COMICS?
Well, no. There were comics about Bob Hope and Jerry Lewis -- but there was never an issue of a book called JACK BENNY COMICS. The above image is a fake that's been making the rounds on the Web.
But Jack and Mary and Rochester and the gang did appear in comics at least once: in a short tale titled "Hello Again! This is Jack Benny" TRUE COMICS # 69, February 1947!

Video: THE ALL NEW ADVENTURES OF LAUREL AND HARDY IN FOR LOVE OR MUMMY (1999)
Who knew there were two mummy movies in 1999?
12 years ago this movie, THE ALL NEW ADVENTURES OF LAUREL AND HARDY IN FOR LOVE OR MUMMY, with Oscar winner F. Murray Abraham in a supporting role, came out of the blue. Maybe it played the theatres for a day or a week, but I never saw it nor heard of it. It popped up on cable some years later, running regularly in the twilight hours. I watched some of it. The plot was stunningly bad, but I was fascinated by the two leads. They did a good pastiche.
Why it seemed like a good idea to do this, I don't know. Bronson Pinchot and Gailard Sartain star as descendents of the original Laurel and Hardy. They do a good job of mimicking the comedy duo, but it's like New Coke. Do not want. Do not need. Best left alone, y'know?
I read a story that Larry Harmon, who managed the Laurel and Hardy property (he created the animated shorts and comic books in the 1960s), was a friend to Pinchot. For Pinchot's 1980s PERFECT STRANGERS sitcom, he (Pinchot) portrayed Stan Laurel in a dream sequence. The story goes that Harmon loaned Pinchot a pair of Stan Laurel's actual shoes for the sequence.
Perhaps this movie was, sincerely, a dream of Pinchot's and Harmon's to create. With Harmon as co-director, the movie was made, for good or for ill; for love, rather than for money I would bet. The silver lining of this: Perhaps it has served as an introduction of the duo to kids.
Here's the trailer for the movie:

Judge Halts Search for Cartoonist Who Embarrassed Cops

A King County judge has temporarily blocked a police search for the person who posted anonymous videos embarrassing officers, in which robo-like cartoon characters banter about sexual relationships and internal affairs.
King County Superior Court Judge James Cayce ordered the stay Tuesday on two search warrants he previously signed for the Renton Police Department. Officers have been searching for the identity of the cartoonist for months.
The stay came after Seattle attorney Harish Bharti filed a motion to quash the warrants, in a move he described as a fight to preserve the First Amendment.
"The cartoonist and everybody else have a constitutionally protected right to be anonymous and exercise their free speech and expression," Bharti said.
"This abuse of police power is beyond belief."

"What Should a Library Mean to Young People?"
Children's Librarian Marguerite Hart was there when the very first library opened in Troy, Michigan. She was their first Children's Librarian. Ms. Hart wrote to celebrities and authors, asking them to comment on her question: "What Should a Library Mean to Young People?" Above is Dr. Seuss' response to the children of Troy.
Ninety Seven others replied, including E.B. White, Edward Ardizzone, Dr. Benjamin Spock, Rowan & Martin, Isaac Asimov, Neil Armstrong, Spiro Agnew, Pierre Trudeau and others.
All of the letters are the Troy Library web site.

Video: Renton, WA: Police to Charge Cartoonist as Criminal; ACLU Offers Help
This story is getting bigger ... still hard to believe this is happening in America.
Below is a news piece from the Washington Station KIRO TV. The local police department has been spoofed in a series of videos by an anonymous animator. The cops want this fellow's hide. They really do. And for good reason: the Renton PD may be rife with corruption.
I wouldn't call this anonymous fellow a cartoonist. The videos are rather long and done with an animation program I've seen before. It's one of those programs where you can create an environment from a template.
Regardless, KIRO TV has lots of serious looking newscasters in suits telling us that no one will talk at the police department will talk about it to them, not even the PD Spokeswoman.
And here's today's piece, where "targeted police feel humiliated." The news anchor asks us if this is covered by the first amendment. Well, yes, parody is covered by the first amendment. I learned that from MAD Magazine!
Watch as Renton Police Chief Kevin Milosevich (!!) says that these animations meet the definition of a crime and the Department was able to obtain a search warrant.
