Jack Markow Balloon Cartoon

Jack Markow: a balloon seller gag from Saturday Review magazine.

"Since I hate to do lettering, I borrowed these balloons from various comic strips. A paste-up job which earns me the fancy word 'collage.'"

From Cartoonist PROfiles #55, September 1982.

As is true for many cartoonists, Markow's books were incredibly important and formative to me. Younger people don't realize how little information used to be available about the craft of making comics. Markow was an oasis in a desert.
