Illustration: Winchester Ammunition Handbook 1951



Mike's 2 cents:

You know, when all of these magazines and pamphlets slap photos on their covers, they all look alike. Here's a gun manual from 1951 that is so striking in its use of illustration that you just look at it for a few extra seconds, taking it in. It's a thing of beauty, isn't it? Wish more publications today would use real drawn imagery by real people.

I can wish, can't I?

I think we all can dream, but such a thing is also a gamble for a publisher. Such covers are expensive and if you use one, you are bound to keep using illustrated covers.
