I'm happy to welcome Dick Buchanan to the blog once more. He has braved the stacks of cartoon-related materials from the golden age of gag cartooning he's saved in his Greenwich Village apartment, and shared a rare gem: Lew Card's Cartoonist's Market Newsletter of June 1, 1953.

Here’s a nifty item rescued from gag cartoon oblivion. It’s what remains of a June 1,1953 copy of Lew Card’s Cartoonists’ Market Letter #97.

This slender bi-weekly newsletter was aimed at working minor market cartoonists and wide-eyed beginners. It was published in California in the early 1950’s.

The Cartoonists’ Market Letter, focused on the hundreds of minor magazines-trade journals, house organs that proliferated in the 1940’s and ‘50’s.

In addition to listing active markets, CML provided a sounding board for cartoonists to warn others of problem editors, or to gripe.

Publisher and Editor Lew Card was a minor market cartoonist active in the 1940’s & ‘50’s.
He also published a number of “How To” pamphlets on cartooning and gag writing.

This issue contains a page by veteran cartoonist Nate Collier, “Beginner’s Pages” (subscriber’s cartoons critiqued by Lew Card) and up-to-date Market Listings, suitable for clipping and including in your own file.

This issue was a joint effort of Lew Card and his neighbor and cohort, cartoonist and writer Carl Kohler.

Note: This copy is incomplete, as the original owner did clip some of the market listings. Those that remain have been reassembled in my usual haphazard manner.
