Children's books have always been held up to a different standard for what is allowable to books for adult consumption. There has never been total agreement on how much is too much intimate detail, but most people would assume children should not have the same access.
The other thing is people have selective indignation about censorship, according to their politics. The strongest trends over the last few decades, for censorship, has come from the Left and has involved reducing books available by 'old straight white men', books that 'perpetrate patriarchy' and so on. Censoring books, like Huckleberry Fin for 'racist language' is one of the great ironies.
