You can't do fat jokes. They're demeaning. Except, in this case, when it's a hippo-on-hippo fat shaming incident. So ... it's OK for animals to be nasty. At least it was OK enough for Reader's Digest to decide to purchase and run in its magazine, and then reprint it in a book collection. Yeah. Those are some catty hippos. I remember drawing this and finding it a challenge drawing a decent hippo. You just have to get those little ears and the snout right. You'll notice I added one of those birds that sometimes hang out with hippos on that mean one who has the gag line. Heaven knows what he thinks of all this.
