Model T Cartoons

One of the harder things to do, if you are a gag cartoonist, is to come up with gags. The writing part of cartooning is always harder than the drawing part, y'know? And if someone came up to you and asked, "Can you do me up a couple dozen Model T cartoons?" Could you do it?

Marvin Townsend did. Here are some cartoons, most by Marvin Townsend, from the book Henry's Wonderful Model T 1908 - 1927 by Floyd Clymer, published by Bonanza Books and copyright 1955 by Mr. Clymer.

Marvin Townsend (1915 - 1999) was a gag cartoonist, known for his comics in comic books (Treasure Chest) and magazines (Amazing Stories, Argosy).

MARVIN TOWNSEND WAS ONE OF THE MOST PROLIFIC CARTTONISTS TO SPECIALIZE IN MINOR MARKET MAGAZINES. IN THE 1950's HE WAS RENOWN FOR HIS ABILITY TO KNOCK OUT 20 CARTOONS TAILORED TO ANY TRADE IN JUST A COUPLE HOURS! HE DOUBTLESS APPEARED IN HUNDREDS OF THESE MAGAZINES, AS DID FELLOW CARTOONISTS GLUECK AND HOWARD PARIS.

Thanks for the info, Dick! I'm still trying to figure out who drew the ink and dry brush cartoons. Let me know if you have any ideas. I don't think it's Townsend, but I'm not 100% sure.

I've had a copy of this book since I was 12 years old, which was in 1965. I had already decided that real cars have running boards. And I have a great affection for the sound of a Model T engine, accurately described as sounding like a load of coal going down a chute or hail on a tin roof. Floyd Clymer's books were an influence on my young mind and I still have them. The cartoons added to the spirit of the Ford, a car that just could not be taken seriously. Several of these illustrations are from Ford's ads for the Model T. And the Google verification just asked me to click on all images with cars!
