From the Dick Buchanan Files: Vintage Gag Cartoons 1946 - 1967

It's Friday! It's Date Night and time to go out .... Oh, wait. Stop. We DON'T go out. At least not until people get their vaccinations. Fortunately, we can stay in and gorge ourselves on some vintage magazine cartoons courtesy of Dick Buchanan! Thanks and take it away, Dick!

VINTAGE GAG CARTOONS
(1946 – 1967)

It’s time once more to delve into the illimitable Cartoon Clip File and extract a few assorted vintage gag cartoons clipped from mid-century magazines . . .

1. MEL LAZARUS. Mel appropriated an “L” from Bill Keane and became Mell Lazarus, creator of the comic strip Miss Peach. The Saturday Evening Post June 3, 1950.

2. CHON DAY. Day always gave The New Yorker “first look” at his work. Collier’s October 19, 1946.

3. AL ROSS. 1000 Jokes Magazine June- August, 1960.

 

4. HERB WILLIAMS. The Saturday Evening Post June 22, 1946.

 

5. SIVIC. SIVIC is a contraction of Sid Gordin’s surname with his wife, Vicky. This Week Magazine March 17, 1946.

6. WILLIAM F. BROWN. Brown started as a gag cartoonist but is best known for writing the book of the musical, The Wiz (1974) and many other Broadway shows. American Magazine August, 1956.

 

7. JOHNNY HART. Another gag cartoonist best known for his later creations, the comic strips B.C. and The Wizard of Id. The Saturday Evening Post December 25, 1954.

8. RAY HELLE. Helle created the comic strips The Flibbertys (1953-1972) and Box Seat for the Chicago Tribune. Collier’s August 7, 1953.

9. TOM HENDERSON. American Legion Magazine October, 1967.


10. SYD HOFF. Collier’s May 26, 1951.

11. JEFFREY MONAHAN. American Magazine February, 1950.

12. BILL KING. The Saturday Evening Post July 22, 1950.

13. BILL MITTLEBEELER. The Saturday Evening Post December 5, 1953.

14. VIRGIL PARTCH. True Magazine July, 1950.

15. FRANK RIDGEWAY. Ridgeway created the comic strip Mr. Abernathy with artist Ralston Jones in 1957. The Saturday Evening Post July 5, 1962.

16. FRANK O’NEAL. O’Neal created the popular comic strip, Short Ribs. Collier’s July 11, 1953.

17. ANTON. (Antonia Yoeman) Punch December 15, 1948.

 

18. LEO SALKIN. Salkin’s 55-year career as film animator and screenwriter began in 1932. In 1983, he received the Winsor McCay Award from the International Animation Film Society in Hollywood. Collier’s November 30, 1946.

 

19. HANK BAEB. Henry (Hank) Baeb was art director of a New York advertising agency as well as a gag cartoonist. His cartoons appeared in the major magazines of the 1950’s. Collier’s March 28, 1953.


20. FRED LUNDY. Lundy was an artist with the Oakland Tribune from 1935-1935 and an editorial cartoonist for the San Francisco Examiner from 1935 until his retirement in 1976. Collier’s September 14, 1946.
